FF7 Week: Rebirth hits Switch 2, Revelation announced at SGF
In one week, Square Enix ported last year's biggest RPG to Switch 2 and dropped the trailer for the Remake trilogy's finale.
FF7 Rebirth lands on Switch 2, Xbox, and PC on June 3 with an 86 Metacritic, while Square Enix unveils FF7 Revelation at SGF — the final chapter of the Remake trilogy, spring 2027.

One week, two FF7 bombs
On June 3, 2026, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth ended its PlayStation exclusivity window, launching simultaneously on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Play Anywhere. Two days later at Summer Game Fest, Square Enix followed up with the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Revelation — the third and final chapter of the Remake trilogy, slated for spring 2027.
For FF fans, this is a week to remember. Rebirth was one of PS5's showcase titles — 92 on Metacritic, enormous open world, refined ATB combat. Seeing it run on Switch 2 raises a real question: is the port worth it, or does too much get lost along the way? And with Revelation, the trilogy that started in 2020 is finally taking shape.
FF7 Rebirth on Switch 2 — what you need to know
The game is available as a Game-Key Card or digital download on the eShop for $49.99 USD (~$68 CAD). Square Enix is running a 20% discount until June 10 alongside a free demo — which brings the price down to around $40 USD (~$55 CAD) for early buyers.
Pre-orders included a Magic: The Gathering promo card featuring Zack Fair. On Xbox Series X|S and PC, the title ships as Play Anywhere — one purchase covers both platforms.
First major ex-PS5 exclusive on Switch 2
Rebirth is the first AAA title of this scale to leave PlayStation exclusivity and land on Switch 2. The original FF7 Remake made it to PC and PS4, but Rebirth was purpose-built for PS5 hardware: continuous streaming across massive zones, dense particle effects, partial ray-tracing. Porting that to Nintendo's hardware is real engineering work.
Version comparison — performance and scores
| Platform | Metacritic | Performance / Notes | Price CAD (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 92 / 100 | 60 fps stable, ray-tracing optionnel, référence visuelle | ~80 $ CAD |
| PC (Steam/Epic) | 90 / 100 | Variable selon config, hautes résolutions supportées | ~68 $ CAD |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 86 / 100 | Chutes de framerate en monde ouvert signalées, portage solide sinon | ~68 $ CAD (49,99 $ US) |
| Xbox Series X|S | 84 / 100 * | Play Anywhere inclus, peu de critiques (4 au 5 juin) | ~68 $ CAD |
* The Xbox score is based on just 4 critic reviews at time of writing — it will shift. The Switch 2 score (86, from 47 reviews) is more reliable.
The gap between PS5 (92) and Switch 2 (86) isn't disastrous — 6 points on Metacritic, and every critic still calls it positive. But framerate drops in open-world areas, noted across multiple reviews, are real. Square Enix hasn't disclosed an official fps target for Switch 2.
Is the Switch 2 port worth it?
Short answer: yes, if you don't have a PS5 or gaming PC. No, if you already do.
The port holds up technically — Rebirth on Switch 2 is still an 80+ hour RPG, with the same combat, the same story, the same eight open-world regions. Framerate drops in dense areas don't break the experience, but they're a reminder that Switch 2 is playing in a different hardware league than PS5. Interior zones and story sequences run fine.
What's more compelling: Rebirth at $49.99 USD (~$68 CAD) on Switch 2 is cheaper than most PS5 AAA titles at $79.99. With the 20% launch discount through June 10, that drops to around $40 USD (~$55 CAD). For anyone wanting to experience Rebirth on their new Switch 2 without paying full PS5 price, that's a reasonable deal.
Switch 2's first real power test
Rebirth also serves as Switch 2's first real benchmark. Not a Nintendo first-party title built for the hardware, not an indie — a multiplatform AAA open world with PS5-grade assets. The 86 Metacritic says it clears the bar. The framerate drops say the margin is thin. Future AAA ports will arrive with this reference in mind.
FF7 Revelation — the trilogy's final chapter
On June 5, 2026, Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Summer Game Fest. Release window: spring 2027, simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store). The timing lines up with the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy VII from 1997.
Cid and Vincent finally playable
The two most-anticipated absent characters from the trilogy are confirmed playable. Vincent Valentine (voiced by Matt Mercer) is described as a quick-draw marksman whose feral transformations can 'devastate the battlefield.' Cid Highwind (voiced by J. Michael Tatum) wields a spear and masters close-quarters fighting — a pilot who fights the same way he flies, straight to the point.
The Highwind airship is central to exploration: players can skydive anywhere on the map from the air, with a smooth transition from altitude to ground level. Two new regions are explorable — Mideel (tropical forest) and Wutai (traditional ninja architecture), both iconic locations from the original FF7.
FITS system — outfits change your combat style
Revelation introduces the FITS (Fashion Integrated Tactical Style) system: equipping different outfits — Warrior, Black Mage — unlocks unique combat abilities. It's a direct mechanical extension of the materia system, adding a layer of tactical customization without reinventing the hybrid ATB/action combat established in the first two games.
Narrative-wise, Cloud and the team face Sephiroth in the trilogy's final confrontation — a meteor marking the sky, monstrous planetary guardians causing global chaos. Square Enix hasn't revealed whether the story follows, diverges from, or reinvents the 1997 original's ending.
The Remake trilogy: six years of work, one chapter left
FF7 Remake launched in April 2020, exclusive to PS4/PS5. Rebirth followed in February 2024, exclusive to PS5 for a year. Revelation in spring 2027 will be multiplatform from day one — a pattern that reflects Switch 2's rise and the end of the long-term exclusivity deals Sony paid Square Enix to maintain.
For Switch 2 players who've never touched the Remake series: both earlier games will be available on the platform before Revelation ships. Square Enix hasn't announced an official trilogy bundle, but the setup is obvious.
« The narrative involves a meteor marking the sky, monstrous planetary guardians causing global chaos, as Cloud and his companions face Sephiroth in the Remake trilogy's final conflict. »

For the La Meute QC community
If you've been waiting for Switch 2 to play Rebirth — now is the time, or at least before June 10. The 20% launch discount expires then. The free demo is a solid way to gauge whether the portable framerate bothers you before committing.
For trilogy fans who already have Rebirth on PS5: Revelation in spring 2027 gives a clear finish line. Cid and Vincent playable, the Highwind, Mideel, Wutai — everything the second episode left on the table. The 30th anniversary timing gives Square Enix plenty of emotional marketing material to work with.
- Rebirth on Switch 2: free demo available now on the eShop
- 20% off through June 10 — $49.99 USD drops to ~$40 USD (~$55 CAD)
- Play Anywhere on Xbox: one purchase = Xbox Series X|S + PC access
- FF7 Revelation: spring 2027, PS5/Xbox/Switch 2/PC, Cid and Vincent playable
La Meute QC verdict
The Rebirth Switch 2 port is good — not perfect, but good. An 86 Metacritic on a game of this scale is a technical achievement. Open-world framerate drops are the price of having a PS5-grade open world in your Switch 2. If you can live with that, especially with the launch discount, the purchase makes sense.
That said, if you already have a PS5 or gaming PC, there's no strong reason to double-dip on Switch 2 — unless portable play in bed is genuinely important to you. PS5 at 92 is still the reference version.
On Revelation: the announcement delivered. Cid playable, Vincent playable, the Highwind, Wutai — Square Enix didn't hold back. Multiplatform from day one, no extended exclusivity. Spring 2027 feels far but it's really twelve months out. The most ambitious JRPG trilogy in modern gaming is finally heading to its conclusion.
