Supermassive Games is leaving its comfort zone with Directive 8020. After the haunted ship of Man of Medan, the cursed village of Little Hope, the frozen mine of House of Ashes and the 80s house of The Devil in Me, the Dark Pictures anthology heads to space with a pitch that mixes Event Horizon and Alien.

The game takes place aboard a spaceship, the Cassiopeia, drifting in deep space after the crew loses all contact with Earth. An unknown entity prowls the corridors — and the choices you make decide who survives.

What's different from previous episodes

Supermassive announces several significant improvements. The game engine runs on Unreal Engine 5 with Nanite and Lumen, which is clearly visible in screenshots — the ship's textures and lighting effects are on another level compared to The Devil in Me.

Directive 8020 has everything it needs to be the most ambitious episode in the Dark Pictures anthology. The 5-player co-op is the real novelty we're excited about — playing a narrative survival horror in a group, each controlling a different character with their own secrets, is a formula that can work extremely well over Discord.

We're watching the release date closely. If Supermassive manages to maintain tension over 5-6 hours with a coherent story, Directive 8020 could land in our top horror games of 2026.
