Why IO Interactive for Bond

IO Interactive announced their partnership with Danjaq (holders of the James Bond license) in 2020. Since then, the Danish studio has been working in parallel on Project 007 (renamed 007 First Light) while finalizing Hitman World of Assassination. Choosing IO isn't coincidence: their mastery of open level design, stealth and multiple targets in Hitman makes them the best-positioned studio to reproduce the Bond spirit — discreet, calculated, but capable of blowing everything up when things go wrong.

007 First Light tells James Bond's origin story — how the secret agent became the 007 we know. It's not a film adaptation. IO creates their own Bond, played by an actor not yet officially revealed.

Gameplay — stealth, action and gadgets

Leaked information and short demos shown at closed events point to a hybrid gameplay: stealth in Hitman style (disguises, restricted areas, silent eliminations), third-person cover action for open phases, and gadgets inspired by the film franchise.

IO Interactive is known for detailed, living environments. 007 First Light trailers show at least three destinations: a villa on the French Riviera, a beach resort in Thailand and an industrial complex in a fictional Middle Eastern country. Each location appears to function as a closed sandbox like Hitman — multiple entries, multiple approaches, multiple ways to reach the objective.

Which actor plays Bond?

IO Interactive hasn't officially confirmed the identity of the actor lending their voice and likeness to James Bond. Rumors circulate around names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson or Henry Cavill, but none have been confirmed. IO clarified that First Light's Bond is canon to their game universe only — not tied to current MGM films.

Date and price

IO Interactive targets 2026 but hasn't given a precise quarter. Given the development started in 2020 and the apparent scope of the project, a Q4 2026 or early 2027 release seems realistic. Expected price: $79.99 USD ($110 CAD) given the title's ambition.

007 First Light is probably the most anticipated spy game since GoldenEye: Rogue Agent or the No One Lives Forever duo. If IO Interactive applies to Bond the same level design rigor as Hitman, we potentially have one of the decade's games in the action-stealth genre.

Our only concern: the lack of a precise date and the little gameplay shown publicly leave some uncertainty. IO is a solid studio — we trust them — but the Bond project is clearly their most ambitious to date.
