One month, an avalanche
June 2026 will go down as a busy month for artificial intelligence. The three major labs — OpenAI, Google and Anthropic — are lining up or preparing new models at the same time. But between an official release, a preview announcement and a plain leak, there's a world of difference. We sort it out, because many articles blur the three.
What has actually shipped
On Anthropic's side, two confirmed releases: Claude Opus 4.8 shipped on May 28, 2026, geared toward code and long-horizon agentic tasks — Databricks reported token costs 61% cheaper for its data agents. Then, on June 9, 2026, Claude Fable 5 arrived, presented as the first public model of the new "Mythos" class. At Google, Gemini 3.5 Flash was made available immediately at the mid-May I/O conference.
What's announced but not yet widely available
Gemini 3.5 Pro was presented by Sundar Pichai at Google I/O (May 19-20, 2026), with availability promised "next month." As of mid-June, the model is still in limited preview on Vertex, with general availability expected by month's end. So it's announced and already testable, but not yet rolled out everywhere.
What's still just a rumour: GPT-5.6
This is the one many wrongly present as a done deal. As of June 11, 2026, OpenAI has made no official GPT-5.6 announcement: no model card, no API docs, no blog post. What exists: a routing reference to "gpt-5.6" spotted in OpenAI's Codex backend by security researcher Haider, and a prediction market (Polymarket) giving an 89% chance of a release by June 30. Likely, then — but not confirmed.
The real shift: the market is moving
Beyond the releases, it's the distribution of usage that's moving. ChatGPT still leads AI chatbots, but its share is slipping to around 53-55% of global web visits, ahead of Gemini (about 27%) and Claude (about 8%). The clearest move: Claude is the fastest-growing major chatbot, up about 306% in web visits in a single quarter (from 203 million in January to 824 million in April 2026).
